Industry point of view
The 2028 traceability mandate is coming. The smart operators are turning it into a margin engine.
FDA's FSMA 204 traceability requirements are locked for July 2028 — and the food and beverage companies treating that deadline as the excuse to finally unify plant, supply chain, and sales data are converting a compliance cost into margin visibility their competitors don't have.
What we see across the industry
The mid-market F&B data stack is a reconciliation nightmare: ERP, warehouse management, route accounting, retailer and distributor portals, and spreadsheets that never agree. Margin by SKU and by customer is guesswork; trade spend and deductions drain profit invisibly.
Traceability recordkeeping — lot codes, critical tracking events — still lives on paper and in Excel at many plants. That was survivable until now; with the 2028 compliance date locked, waiting means retrofitting under deadline pressure.
And the AI investment wave is arriving with a familiar pattern: most producers are increasing spend, very few have scaled past pilots. The bottleneck isn't the AI — it's the fragmented data underneath it.
